Memory fragments, waking dreams—eruptions of the past and future into the porous walls of
the present. For experimental film director Pierre Coulibeuf, these precious moments of self-disappearance
are also those of pure possibility, where the hardness of identity is exchanged for the suppleness
of what we might become. It is the in-between, the place of being made and remade from unlikely
collaborations of fiction, fantasy, and the real.
First impressions are essential, which is why FIAF has chosen two of Coulibeuf’s most absorbing
works—a short and a feature film—as an introduction to one of France’s most rigorous cinematic
thinkers. Inspired in part by writer Maurice Blanchot, Love Neutral combines film, painting,
and literature into a dizzying cinematic dance at the edge of representation. Balkan Baroque stars
famed artist Marina Abramovic as a woman caught at the interstices of dream and reality.
