Michel Hazanavicius, 2006. 99 min. 35mm VOSTA.
With Jean Dujardin, François Damiens, Khalid Maadour, Youssef Hamid.
In French with English subtitles.
Academy Award-winner Jean Dujardin stars as the slick but clueless secret agent OSS 117, tasked by the French government to find a missing agent in Cairo—and bring peace to the Middle East, no less. Set in 1955, this delightful spoof of early James Bond adventures and other spectacles of silver screen exoticism has retro allure to spare, but a distinctly contemporary flair in turning the joke against the navel-gazing French spy.
OSS 117’s constant cultural faux pas—such as complaining that the call to prayer is interfering with his beauty sleep—make for hilarious but slyly incisive entertainment.
Series curated by Delphine Selles-Alvarez and Léonore Chastagner.
