Artistic Director

Position Summary:
FIAF’s artistic director is responsible for conceiving, developing and implementing the artistic vision and focus of FIAF. The Artistic Director will make the decisions about the ongoing development of the aesthetic values and activities such as the production of FIAF’s annual multidisciplinary festival, Crossing the Line, as well as the productions and events throughout the season.

FIAF presents a wide range of programming, including festivals, films, performances, talks, among other offerings taking place primarily at FIAF. The Artistic Director will articulate a dynamic and engaging programmatic strategy and structure and bring together the talents and resources necessary.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates programs for the year
  • With the recommendation of the President, develops annual program budget
  • Acts as a spokesperson for the FIAF's artistic purpose via speaking engagements, public and social appearances, and, as requested, at fundraising events and solicitations
  • Fosters the development of good relations with other cultural organizations by participating in meetings and joint activities where appropriate
  • Reports to the Executive Committee Members / Board of Directors to give an update on artistic activity
  • Works with the Development department to raise funds to support FIAF programs;
  • Strategically analyzes the profit/loss potential of individual programs to ensure achievement of annual revenue targets within a mission-driven program.

Experience & Qualifications

  • The successful candidate must be a highly creative, analytical and visionary leader/manager with an intuitive business sense, who will have the following experience and characteristics:
  • Leadership experience and seasoned management skills during a minimum of ten (10) years with a track record in supervising people, operations and budgets for an institution known for excellence in the arts;
  • Fluent in French and English with an in-depth knowledge of the French artistic scene as well as the New York cultural landscape;
  • Proven track record of dynamic and well-balanced programming that attracts and engages diverse audiences, and is financially viable; proven success in implementing a long-range vision;
  • Experience working with and negotiating performers’ contracts, including a solid understanding of emerging and traditional artists;
  • Personal experience working broadly with literary artists, and academics and other speakers, both within and beyond the realm of performing arts;
  • A successful track record of effective staff management – motivating and encouraging a diverse group of talented and creative individuals;
  • Possess exceptional external and internal relationship-building skills, along with a strong customer- and community-focused mentality; familiarity and experience with cultivating individual donors would be a plus;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills coupled with problem-solving experience; the ability to make thoughtful, clear, knowledgeable presentations and serve as a compelling representative of FIAF, internally and externally, to a wide range of stakeholders.

Communications Director

Position Summary: The French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) seeks an experienced candidate for the open position of Communications Director. Under the direction of the Vice President of Marketing and Communications, the Communications Director is responsible for all FIAF public relations, content creation, and social media.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Create, implement, and oversee strategies and timelines for communications, public relations, and social media.
  • Devise press strategies, write press releases, distribute press materials and media packages, maintain media contact lists in diverse fields, obtain preview articles press listings and reviews, and manage press archives, photos and digital files.
  • Create dynamic institutional and editorial content for all of FIAF’s channels, including the website and social media.
  • Work closely with artists and programming teams to understand each project to best determine communications roll-out.
  • Coordinate with members of the press as well as the press departments of partner organizations to keep FIAF’s message/brand consistent.
  • Manage and maintain the monitoring and analytics systems to track traditional media and social media engagement, including important news items.
  • Monitor effective benchmarks for measuring the impact of FIAF news/announcements.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • A minimum of five years of proven successful experience in press or media relations is preferred.
  • Must have the ability to supervise and/or direct activities in the area of public relations and social media.
  • Must also possess very strong skills in written and spoken English, an acceptable level of computer literacy and familiarity with communications software including, but not limited to, MS Office, Adobe, databases, HTML, and FTP, and must be able to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good human relations skills are a must, as is the ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment.
  • Advanced French language skills are ideal, though not required.

Youth Programs Coordinator

Reports To: Vice President of Education

The FIAF Language Center is the largest language school dedicated to teaching the French language in the tri-state area. With more than 7,000 registrations annually, we offer French in three convenient locations: Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Brooklyn’s Carroll Gardens, and Montclair, NJ.

In conjunction with its adult French language learning program, FIAF offers French language learning programs for toddlers (ages 1-4), kids (5-10) and teens (11-17) from beginner to advanced levels, including French for native-speakers.

Our program offers a high level of language instruction through curricula that are specially designed to meet children's pedagogical needs at every stage of their development. All our classes provide an integrated approach to French language and culture.

Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Vice President of Education, the Youth Programs Coordinator organizes, develops and implements all the Language Center youth programs.

Main Responsibilities
Pedagogy

  • Develop and enrich the youth programs class offerings, based on clients survey and competition
  • Organize and lead teacher training sessions
  • Evaluate and improve teacher performance through classroom observations and coaching
  • Stay current with the latest methodology, pedagogical resources and technology for the teaching of French as a foreign language to a young audience
  • Stay current with the official French curricula for primary school instructions as well as teaching French as a foreign language (official curriculum of the French Ministry of Education and European Framework)
  • Substitute for a teacher classes and conduct placement test occasionally

Administrative Tasks

  • Schedule classes at the beginning of each session
  • Assign classes to teachers
  • Oversee enrollment in youth programs classes/workshops
  • Assist with the registration/transfer process at the start of each session
  • Ensure that classes run smoothly (supply orders, snacks etc)
  • Hire and train new interns (responsibility assignments)
  • Recruit new students/families at fairs
  • Communicate with parents via email on a regular basis

Teachers Management/Human Resources

  • Manage a team of about 30-40 part-time teachers in the youth programs
  • Advise teachers on pedagogy and available pedagogical resources
  • Identify the training needs of the pedagogical team
  • Recruit, train, and assist new instructors

Business Development

  • Communicate program content and updates to parents and answer inquiries
  • Meet with parents regularly to ensure their satisfaction and re-enrollment
  • Seek out prospective clients and ensure enrollment (fairs, open houses… etc)
  • Foster a positive relationship between students, parents and instructors
  • Stay current with the class offerings of our competitors for young French learners as well as with their marketing strategies (web content, etc) in order to establish FIAF as a leader in the field
  • Participate in the elaboration and implementation of FIAF cultural programs for kids
  • Collaborate with FIAF sponsors (kids programs)
  • Nurture partnerships with youth literature and FLE publishers

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Native French-speaker or equivalent proficiency
  • Master 1 or 2 minimum in the field of teaching French as a foreign language or DAEFLE (diplôme d’aptitude à l’enseignement du français langue étrangère)
  • An official teaching diploma (professeur des écoles for instance)
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in teaching French as a foreign language to a young audience
  • Have good knowledge and understanding of the CEFRL (Common European Framework of Reference for the teaching of Foreign Languages) and the Ministry of Education curriculum for preschool
  • Must be knowledgeable on pedagogy as it relates to French language instruction for children 1 to 17 years old
  • Must be knowledgeable with technologies applied to the teaching of foreign languages
  • Must be knowledgeable with Smart Board technology
  • Must demonstrate a strong capacity to work in a team environment
  • Must be able to adapt to multiple and shifting priorities, be meticulous, thorough and detail- oriented, and be able to meet deadlines and manage time effectively
