Literature makes a major contribution to a nation’s cultural heritage and exposure to authentic written texts is one of the many ways foreign language learners can improve their language proficiency. In this course, discover classic and contemporary French and Francophone literature through the analysis and discussion of major literary works, either focusing on one text or on a specific theme woven through a variety of texts. This course is designed for literature lovers who would like to learn about the history of literature, of French expression, and to become more independent in reading challenging texts in their original French language.

  In this class, we are going to study Numero Deux, by David Foenkinos, a fictional story about a young boy who was not chosen to play the role of Harry Potter in the films. We will start by predicting what the book is about and then as we dive into the book, we will study not only the language but also the themes of the work: second chance and identity reconstruction after failure. We will also be listening to a podcast about the book in order to better understand the author’s purpose.

  This class is for students who want to use real-world documents to continue to improve their knowledge of French language and culture and who enjoy discussing works with others. During the winter session, we will continue with this text and rewrite it to adapt it for the theater. In the spring session, our focus will be on performing the adaptation we created.
