When the Italian explorer Giovani di Verrazzano became the first European to visit New York, he named the region “Angoulême” in honor of King Francis I of France, former count of Angoulême. King Francis had sent Verrazzano onboard the ship La Dauphine to find a shortcut to India along the East Coast of North America.
Filmmaker Marie-France Brière and historian Florent Gaillard followed in the wake of Verrazzano’s extraordinary adventure, tracing his journey on both sides of the Atlantic and discovering the rich history of Angoulême as well as Verrazzano’s logbooks in New York.
