Dir. Louis Malle, 1990, 107 min
With Michel Piccoli, Miou-Miou, Michel Duchaussoy, Dominique Blanc
In French with English subtitles
Set in the backdrop of nationwide protests that took place in May 1968, Louis Malle homes in on an eccentric bourgeois family, brought together after the death of the family matriarch. As the multigenerational clan returns to the rural family estate in Southern France where her son Milou (Michel Piccoli) has lived his entire life, interpersonal bickering distracts them from the simmering political climate. Even as mounting strikes force the family to flee from their home, longstanding rifts and petty squabbles blind them to the demonstrations in faraway Paris.
