Dir. Serge Gainsbourg, 1976, France, 89min, DCP, Color
With Jane Birkin, Joe Dallesandro, Gérard Depardieu, Hugues Quester, Reinhard Kolldehoff
In French with English subtitles
Inspired by the title of his controversial 1967 song (best known for being re-recorded with his then-girlfriend, actress and singer Jane Birkin, in 1969), cult icon Serge Gainsbourg wrote, directed, and scored this 1976 tale of doomed love. It follows lonely truck stop waitress Johnny (Birkin), hunky garbage truck driver Krassky (Joe Dallesandro), and his lover Padovan (Hugues Quester), who becomes increasingly jealous of Johnny and Krassky’s relationship.
“The picture… is not for everybody. But it’s genuinely, eccentrically Gainsbourgian.” –New York Times
“Don’t bother going to see my film, see Gainsbourg’s. That is a work of art.” –François Truffaut
