Dir. Jacques Rivette, 2009, France, Italy, 84 min, 35mm, Color
With Jane Birkin, Sergio Castellitto
In French with English subtitles
This charming 2009 drama is a tale of lost love, chance encounters, and the transformative power of art. On a winding mountain road, Vittorio (Sergio Castellitto) gallantly stops to help Kate (Jane Birkin) fix her broken down car, then speeds off without having spoken a word. Later in town, Vittorio learns that Kate has returned to join her family’s traveling circus, and that she left under mysterious circumstances fifteen years ago. Intrigued by her story, Vittorio attends the next several big top shows, and—little by little—is ingratiated into the circus and the lives of its performers, all the while trying to discover the secret that led to Kate’s sudden departure.

“…elegant, simple structure…Rivette provides a male lead, finally, to rival his decades of devotion to actresses from Juliet Berto and Jane Birkin to Geraldine Chaplin and Bulle Ogier.” –Film Comment Magazine
