Fifteen-year-old Gustavo spends his days in a social center outside São Paulo that the Evangelical church runs. His mother, Giselle, has problems with alcoholism. She’s summoned to the center, where she meets Valeria, the church’s pastor and a social worker responsible for evaluating and reporting how Giselle cares for her children. As Valeria pressures Giselle to join the congregation, Gustavo confesses his love for Taina, whom no one has met.

On the Spot
Dir. Justine Triet, 2006, France, 26min, DCP, Color
Without dialogue or commentary

This short documentary transports viewers into the eye of the 2006 anti-CPE youth protests in Paris, capturing the frenetic, dizzying atmosphere by juggling the camera’s point of view between individual participants, fragmented groups, and the massive crowd. Director Justine Triet’s ballet between an arms-length and up-close approach encourages us to explore myriad perspectives and motivations—from protesters to journalists to the police—as violence erupts, lending a nuanced perspective regarding those descending upon and covering the demonstration.
