With Sophie’s Misfortunes, director Christophe Honoré brings the classic 19th-century French fable Les Malheurs de Sophie (by the Countess de Ségur) to the screen. A delight for all ages, the film follows the mischievous and headstrong young Sophie (Caroline Grant), who is sent to live with her rigid stepmother (Muriel Robin). With help from her two close friends and their mother, Sophie plots to escape the clutches of her horrible caregiver.

Honoré’s colorful retelling features beautiful period detail and modern elements–conjuring both the tragedies of everyday life and the imaginative freedom of childhood.

This free screening is presented as part of FIAF’s 2023 Fête de la Rentrée Fall Open House celebration.
