We are saddened to hear of the passing of Robert G. Goelet, a generous philanthropist and ardent supporter of French culture and education in the United States.

Mr. Goelet was notably instrumental in the 1972 merger of the two leading Franco-American organizations in New York, the French Institute and the Alliance Française, creating the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) as it is known today. This visionary union marked the beginning of a more robust institution, better able to serve the community in New York and beyond. This transformative event had a positive and lasting impact on our institution, still to this day.

Mr. Goelet served on the Board of Trustees of the French Institute from 1951-1972 and of the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) from 1972-2018.  He served FIAF as Chairman and was most recently Chairman Emeritus of the Board.

Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends.
